There is a wonderful documentary about the women who write "romance" (ahem) novels. They were freed by the internet, no longer tied to the whims of Big Publishing. Even in the absence of full internet freedom, others, such as Beverly Jenkins, branched out, combining African-American history with historical romance. Cite to documentary Love Between the Covers:
